Doing Our Best.



We put ourselves under great pressure. We want to try and keep everyone happy. But, inevitably it is impossible to keep everyone happy and always succeed in doing well. We have to judge ourselves on our motives and intentions – not the external outcome or what other people think. If we work with the right attitude, doing the best in difficult circumstances – what else can we do? Don’t allow the unreasonable expectations of others to disturb your inner peace. If we can work with this sense of detachment then we will avoid many feelings of guilty, worry and anxiety. It is these forces that disturb own inner peace.

Inner peace can never be dependent upon outer success and outer praise. It is the nature of the world to give success / failure, praise / blame in equal measure. We have to transcend this at be at peace with ourselves whatever happens.

THE POWER OF COMPASSION


FEW OF US WILL GET through life without experiencing some episodes of anxiety, anger, worry or depression.

YOUR OWN WORST CRITIC

Learning to have compassion for oneself is no different from having compassion for others.
'Compassion means feeling moved by other's suffering and offering understanding and kindness when mistakes are made, rather than judging harshly. Self compassion involves acting the same way
towards oneself. So, instead of criticizing ourselves for inadequacies or shortcomings, we learn to be kind and understanding when confronted in difficult times.


WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES AND WE ALL NEED TO BE LOVED


Practicing compassionate imagery
Psychologist Paul Gilbert suggest the following exercise to train our mind in compassion


* Be mindful of your emotions. When you notice that you are becoming frustrated or self critical, make a decision to adjust this in your mind.

* Deliberately focus on breathing for a couple of minutes, and feel your body slowing down.

*Build a compassionate image. This can be a version of yourself, a stranger or someone you know, but it is important you give them the following qualities- wisdom, strength, warmth and non-judgement.
Visualise the facial expression and tone of voice of this person.

*Now imagine you can see the critical or upset part of yourself and consider the thinking and wisdom of this compassion imagine. You are not trying to get rid of these feelings, but are standing back from them with a compassionate understanding.
